Rent Tax Credit in Ireland
The rent tax credit was reintroduced in Ireland for 2022 onwards. It provides a credit to renters who pay qualifying rent on their principal private residence.
Overview
The rent tax credit is a non-refundable tax credit that reduces the amount of income tax owed. It is available to individuals who are renting a property that is their principal private residence, a "digs" arrangement, or certain student accommodation.
Credit Amounts
| Tax Year | Single Person | Jointly Assessed Couple |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 & 2023 | €500 | €1,000 |
| 2024 | €750 | €1,500 |
| 2025 | €1,000 | €2,000 |
Eligibility
To qualify for the rent tax credit, the following conditions generally apply:
- The property must be your principal private residence (or qualifying digs/student accommodation)
- The tenancy must be registered with the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB), where applicable
- The landlord cannot be a connected person (e.g. parent, sibling)
- The credit is not available if you are receiving social housing support, HAP, or RAS
- You must be tax-resident in Ireland
How to Claim
Step 1: Gather Details
You will need your landlord's name, address, and the total rent paid during the tax year. Keep proof of payments (bank statements, receipts).
Step 2: Log into Revenue myAccount
Access the "Manage Your Tax" section and select the relevant tax year. For the current year, you can apply for real-time credits. For previous years, submit an income tax return.
Step 3: Enter Rent Details
Enter the total rent paid and your landlord's details. The credit will be applied to your tax calculation. Remember, the credit is capped at the amounts shown in the table above — it does not depend on how much rent you actually pay beyond qualifying.
Key Points
- The credit is non-refundable — it reduces your tax bill but cannot create a refund on its own
- You can backdate claims for 2022 and 2023 if you didn't claim at the time
- Both partners in a couple can each claim the single person amount if assessed separately
- The credit is available for digs arrangements from 2024 onwards
