Medical Expenses Tax Relief in Ireland

Irish taxpayers can claim tax relief at 20% on qualifying medical expenses. This guide covers what qualifies, how to claim, and what records to keep.

What Is Medical Expenses Relief?

Medical expenses tax relief allows taxpayers in Ireland to claim a tax deduction on certain health-related costs. The relief is available at the standard rate of 20%, meaning for every €100 of qualifying expenses, €20 can be claimed back from Revenue.

This relief is available to all Irish taxpayers — PAYE employees, self-employed individuals, and pensioners. Claims can be made for expenses paid for yourself, a spouse or civil partner, a dependant, or any other person.

Eligible Expenses

The following medical expenses generally qualify for tax relief:

  • Doctor (GP) and consultant visit fees
  • Prescribed drugs and medicines (over a threshold)
  • Hospital and nursing home charges
  • Physiotherapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy
  • Dental treatments (non-routine, e.g. crowns, orthodontics)
  • Maternity care not covered by the public system
  • Kidney patients' expenses and certain travel costs for treatment
  • Hearing aids, orthopaedic beds/chairs, and wheelchairs

What Does Not Qualify

  • Routine dental and ophthalmic care (e.g. check-ups, glasses)
  • Cosmetic surgery (unless medically necessary)
  • Expenses already reimbursed by health insurance or the HSE

How to Claim

Step 1: Collect Your Receipts

Keep all medical receipts and invoices. Revenue does not require you to submit them with your claim, but you must keep them for 6 years in case of an audit.

Step 2: Log into Revenue myAccount

Go to Revenue's myAccount service. Navigate to "Manage Your Tax" and select the relevant tax year.

Step 3: Submit Your Claim

Complete an Income Tax Return (Form 12 for PAYE). Enter your total qualifying medical expenses. The 20% relief will be calculated automatically.
